In Memory of Matthew Dickinson

Updated: Apr 22

On the 2th of April 2020, British Fencing released this message:

"Matthew Dickinson, former Junior GBR fencer died tragically this weekend from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome).

Age 20, Matt represented GBR in over thirty U17 and U20 international events, including 4 European and World Championships.

In March 2016, at age 16 Matt became the youngest winner of the U23 National Championships, winning the U20 Junior title the same year. One of Britain's most successful young epee fencers of recent years, Matt’s European U17 Circuit results included individual gold in Ankara (2015), and two top 8 finishing positions in Bonn (2014) and Krakow (2014).

On behalf of BF and the fencing community, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family at this time."

Matthew had some of his earliest fencing experiences at Durham Phoenix and many club members and coaches past and present will have known and remember Matthew. The club would like to echo the sentiment expressed by British Fencing and many others, by sending our own message of condolence to Matthew's family at this tragic time. Matthew's brother Aiden (who also fenced at Durham Phoenix) has "received requests from his friends to set up some form of page, for people to donate to, as to fund a memorial for Matthew, for his memory to live on." You can find more details of the fund and donate here.
